Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Biography
Ambassador Ahmed Sareer was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 30 October 2024.
Ambassador Sareer began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives since 1986. He has previously served as Foreign Secretary, Permanent Representative to the United Nations headquarters in New York, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States of America and the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He also held diplomatic postings at Maldives Missions in Colombo, Brussels and London.
During his tenure in New York, he served as the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), a negotiating coalition within the United Nations comprised of 37 small island and coastal states. He also served as Co-Chair on behalf of the President of General Assembly for the Steering Committee on Partnerships for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) constituted under UN General Assembly resolution 70/202.
He has also served as the Director of Asian Affairs and Head of the Peace, Security, and Conflict-Resolution Unit, and prior to that, as Advisor to the Secretary-General at the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Director at the Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Born on 1965 in Malé, Maldives, he holds a Master of Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University, Australia, and a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Canberra, Australia. His extensive educational background also includes specialized training in international crisis management, foreign service, mediation and strategic studies.
